Moultonboro Lion’s Club to celebrate the  2013 ice racing season.  The
evening started with a social hour with appetizers, beverages, and
lots of stories about this year’s 5 ice races.  The social time was
followed by a fantastic dinner with all the fixins prepared
by Melody Martel.  With the preliminary socializing and eating out of the
way, club patriarch and long time ice and dirt racer Jack Cook MC’d
the various raffles and recognitions portion of the evening.

The many hard working club volunteers, from the gate people to the plow
guys, were recognized, special awards were presented, and the race
division champions were crowned.  The big trophies for the champions
went to Matt Morrill of Moultonboro V8 Stock class, Rick Martel of Moultonboro Modified class,
Tim Chase of Northfield 4-Cylinder class, and Chris Taylor of Moultonboro in the Junior class.

The club raced 5 times this season with its biggest event being the 29th annual Latchkey Cup charity race held on Berry Pond.  The race is held on Saturday so that our friends from the New England Ice Racing Association from the Milton area and the Jaffery Ice Racing Association can take part making this the biggest ice racing event in New England.  This year’s event raised $5,150 which will go to worthy causes in the Lakes Region.  Donations have already been made to benefit two local people with cancer and further donations are going to scholarships for students at Moultonborough Academy, Inter-Lakes HS, and Kingswood HS.

If you are a racer and would like to try racing on the ice in 2014,
check the Club website for rules and contact one of the listed club
members to learn how to get involved.  If you are a race fan that has
never been to an oval track ice race, check us out next year after

have tons of photos and club info.  Enjoy the summer and join us next
winter when the ice thickens up.

We could talk for hours on end and talk about thousands of race’s that have made driver’s the talk at the supper table on a hot July night with family and friends. With all consideration aside when it come’s to open wheel racing Bentley Warren is sure at the top of the list. Many of our fan’s came foreword this week and shared there though on this question and they all had the same answer. Bentley started his career racing on the short tracks all over New England winning the most prestigious race’s from Star Speedway to Oswego Speedway, From there he went to Indy to race in Indianapolis 500. Bentley sure has paved the way for alot of driver’s and has alway’s been a fan favorite not matter where you go.

Young Eric Adams was introduced to the drivers and made an honorary member of the Lakes Region Ice Racing Club.  Eric was presented with a trophy as a winner in his battle against cancer along with an autographed goody bag and a Latchkey Cup sweatshirt.  Eric’s family was given a gas card and a grocery card to help offset the extra expenses they have encountered.  The donation was funded by the annual Latchkey benefit race held earlier in the season.  The club now has a new member and ice racing has a new fan.

 

The Juniors were the first division on the ice for the day.  Jackie Martel in her #32 VW Rabbit, repaired after extensive damage last week, won the first feature with Chris Taylor (8) in second place.  Chris won the second feature and the overall trophy.

 

Mike Horsch of Moultonboro got his #2 flying and took the first modified feature followed by Rick Martel (28) also of Moultonboro.  Tuftonboro’s Jake Williams drove his sprint car to the win in the second feature with Rick Martel again in second place.  Rick took the overall Modified division trophy with the best combined finished of 2 seconds.

 

Northfield’s Tim Chase had ‘em covered with his #40 Toyota MR2 Tim again dominated the 4 Cylinder Division. Tim chalked up the 4 Cylinder overall and notched his 5th and 6th feature wins of the season.

 

The V8 Stock Division was last out with Moultonboro’s Matt Morrill (9) winning both features and the overall.  Adam Cahoon (99) of Moultonboro took the second place trophy.

 

The Club’s next event is scheduled for Sunday, ice conditions permitting, on either Lee or Berry Pond starting at 12:30.  Check the club’s website atwww.LakesRegionIceRacingClub.com or facebook page for the latest race/ice status, information about coming events, and for race photos and video.  See you on the ice.

Many driver’s  have moved south to either pursue there career as a driver or even as part of a crew and of course in the media. This is what we have come up with for the top ten most successful driver’s.

Leading the top ten list is of course Maine’s own Ricky Craven, who can forget that memorable race at Darlington with Kurt Busch. But let’s not forget the Ricky also won the OxFORD 250 AND HE WAS ALSO THE 1991 Busch North Champion. Ricky is also part of the elite few that have won in all three of NASCAR’s top three division’s.

In the second spot is Randy Lajoie from Norwalk Conn, Randy began his career racing in the modified division at the now defunct Danbury Arena where he won the Championship in 1981. In 1985 he then went on to win the Busch North Championship, Randy then went south to try his hand and had probably one of the worst wreck’s at Daytona. But that didn’t stop him as he went on to win consecutive Busch South Championships in 1996 and 1997.

Mike Rowe come’s in in the third spot, Mike’s career started at Oxford Plains Speedway where he won Seven Championships and Three Oxford 250′s. Mike has also won Championships at Wiscasset and Beech Ridge, but it doesn’t stop there Rowe also has Championship’s with the PASS, ACT and the old NEPSA Series.

In the fourth spot is Ben Rowe who much like his dad Mike Rowe has done well in his career starting with the1992 OPS Compact division Champion; 1995 OPS Late Mode division Champion; 2000 IPSC Champion; 2000 Northeast Pro Stock Association (NEPSA) Champion; 2000 Oxford Open Series Champion; three-time Pro All Stars Series North (PASS North) Champion (2002-03, 2005); two-time TD Banknorth Oxford 250 Champion (2003-04).

The Irish Angel Dick McCabe come’s in the fifth spot, Dick won Two Championship’s on the old NASCAR North Tour in 1981 and 1982. The Irish Angel also won the Oxford 250 in 1988 and then again won back to back Championship’s in the Busch North Series in 1992 and 1993.

3 Time Oxford 250 Champion Dave Dion is in the Sixth spot, Dave not only won the 250 but he is also the 1976 North Series Champion and the 1996 Busch North Champion.

Johnny Clark sit’s in the position number seven with Six PASS Championship’s in 04,06 and then 4 in a row in 08,09,10, and 2011.

Doiron and his team went to Florida ready as ever for the season to start, with a new car built out of the Dale Shaw Racecars shop in Center Conway, New Hampshire.  It didn’t take long for Doiron to get a feel for the new car, as he was consistently fast in practice.  He would end up qualifying third in the eighteen car field and after the re-draw, he would roll off in the sixth spot.

Through the opening laps, Doiron practiced patience as the field paraded around the tight quarter mile track.  Multiple cautions in the beginning of the race slowed Doiron’s progress, but by the halfway break at lap 100, he was up to second.  During the break, the team were able to put on two new right side tires, and let the driver finish the job.

On the restart, Doiron fought hard with the 5 of Joe Boyd for the lead, and after ten laps, the 73 machine was in the lead.  Pulling out to a straightaway advantage on the field, it looked like it would be clear sailing for Doiron until a caution on lap 174 slowed the field once again.  On the restart, Boyd was able to get in front of Doiron, but with eight laps to go, he made his move and drove back to the top spot and drove away to take the win in the Winter Meltdown 200.

“We had a great car all weekend, I knew I had to be patient and the race would come to us,” explained Doiron in victory lane, “this is what we come down here to do, win races and this is a great way to start the season.”

We all have our opinion as to Who is the most successful Driver to have graced our beloved short tracks. IMG_2750                                    This would include Past or Present Drivers, like Johhny Clark who has won 6 PASS Championships or a Past Driver like Dick McCabe who won 4  Busch North Championships. But do these Championships mean they are the most successful. I want to hear from you,let us know what you think. It can be your local Pro Stock, Late Model or Street Stock Driver, he or she does not have to be from a touring series.
