Moultonboro, NH – The Lakes Region Ice Racing Club hosted the 29th
annual Latchkey Cup ice race on Saturday in Moultonboro, NH. Ice
racers from the Milton and Jaffery clubs again joined the Lakes Region
racers to make the Latchkey the largest ice race in the northeast.

Postponed from the original January date due to ice conditions, the
annual Latchkey Cup, a benefit event for the Dartmouth-Hitchcock
Norris Cotton Cancer Center, was run Saturday in front of a large
crowd on Berry Pond. Racing started on a nice winter morning with the
hot laps and qualifying heats for the 5 divisions of cars: Juniors,
4Cyl Front Wheel Drive, 4Cyl Rear Wheel Drive, V8 Stock, and the
mighty Modifieds. After a mid-day lunch break and a “meet the drivers
and check out the cars” session held on the front stretch, the racers
prepared for the Latchkey’s feature events.

First out was the combined 4 cylinder divisions and last week’s
winner, Tim Chase (40) of Northfield, taking the checkers followed by
Moultonboro’ Alicia Taylor (7).

The Modified feature, sponsored by Ambrose Brothers. Inc of Meredith,
took to the ice next with Jake Williams (73) of Ctr Ossipee taking the
lead and the win after early leader Rick Martel (28) of Moultonboro
broke an axle.

Jackie Martel (32) of Moultonboro lead the early laps of the Junior
Division feature with Chris Taylor (8) also of Moultonboro working his
way past at the mid-point and motoring on to the victory.

The growing V8 Sock Division took to the track for the final event of
the day. With masterful driving, and a well executed pit stop for an
electrical repair, Moultonboro’s Mike Frank (00) took the win. John
Stephens (27) and Adam Cahoon (99) finished 2nd and 3rd respectfully.
The trophies for the Stock event were provided by SAL Post 33 of the
American Legion of Meredith.
The annual Latchkey Cup race, this was the 29th, benefits the

race. Check the club’s website at www.LakesRegionIceRacingClub.comor
