Race fans, we sit at a track in the most uncomfortable seats with our over priced hot dog and warm drink, just to watch a few cars go around a track.  Why do we do it?

(Welcome back to Question of the Week, where we ask the Motorsports fan questions in search for the best answers.  You may comment below with an image of your favorite, and next week we will post what we think are the ten best answers)

I’ll tell you why, to see some of the best drivers compete and entertain us with some of the most thrilling races.  I have a few that come to mind, from Nascar to Formula 1 to the short tracks.

My personal favorite was 2009 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway with the Nascar Whelen Modified Tour.  You can probably argue that every Modified race run at the “Magic Mile” is a great race, which they all are.  This one had everything though.  It was one of the best races I had ever seen, with lead changes just about every lap between the top guys, and being able to see one of my heroes Ted Christopher drive through the field after an oil problem left him a lap down early.

New England 100

That race had plenty of drama and it all unfolded on the last lap with Christopher leading, and Donny Lia in the Mystic Missile #4 looking to get around him on the final lap.  Just as he made his move, Todd Szegedy made his move as well, and the three went into the final corner in a heated battle for the win.  Off the final corner, Lia and Christopher made contact, with Christopher and Szegedy sent into the wall with Lia crossing the line first.

It was just one of those races that you barely sat down on that hot and uncomfortable bench for, those are the best ones.

Here’s the video of that finish.

In all of my years involved with racing, the best or should i say greatest finish that i have read about seen video’s about and the photo’s that alway’s come up when its looked up on the web. The great battle between Richie Evans and Geoff Bodine at Martinsville, the one thing alway’s seems to stick out to me was the fact that every person interviewed said Richie never took his foot of the gas until he crossed the finish line. This will go down as the best finish in racing history for me hands down.

The end result, truly the best finish in my book.

I’d have to say the July 2012 modified race at NHMS. The finish was close between Mike Stefanik and Ron Silk.

The 2011 Indy 500 was certainly a crazy finish. JR Hildebrand seemingly had the race in the bag, until a lap car forced him into the marbles, which caused him to smack the wall off turn 4. Dan Wheldon sailed right by him to take an unthinkable win with a team on a one race deal.
Wish you were still here Dan, you were one of the good guys for sure.

Thought you were going to mention another great finish Matt haha. But seriously the past few Indy 500s have been insane right down to the last lap. Hopefully with all the rule and personnel changes that IndyCar is making doesn’t stop their momentum from last year. RIP Dan
