Large Crowd Kicks Off the Lakes Region 2013 Ice Racing Season
Moultonboro, NH – The Lakes Region Ice Racing Club opened the 2013
season of automobile, oval track ice racing last Sunday on Lee Pond in
Moultonboro, NH. The Milton ice racing club did not have enough ice
to race and many of their members journeyed to the Lakes Region to
race. Lots of cars and lots of fans made for a great show.

A ¼ mile track was laid out on Lee Pond and racing started on a chilly
afternoon with the hot laps and qualifying heats for the 5 divisions
of cars: Juniors, 4Cyl Front Wheel Drive, 4Cyl Rear Wheel Drive, V8
Stock, and the mighty Modifieds.

First on the track was V8 Stock Division. Matt Morrill, driving his
new number 9 Monte Carlo stocker, led most of the laps fending off
Mike Frank (00) in the early running and later battling Danny Cook
(1). A last lap touch by the leaders, opened a hole for Adam Cahoon
who was following closely in third. Adam shot through the opening and
took the win in his new, bright orange, Ollie’s Garage number 99 Monte
Carlo ice racer.

Next out were the Junior Division drivers (13-15 year old).
Moultonboro’s Jackie Martel (32) won the event, leading flag to flag.
Chris Taylor (8) of Moultonboro challenged for the lead late in the
race, but ran out of laps.

A strong field of open wheel, Modified cars took the track with Rick
Martel (28) of Moultonboro on the pole and young Jake Williams of
Tuftonboro in his number 73 sprint car close behind. Rick used the
inside line while Jake worked the outside staying out of the Rick’s
dust. Rick eventually pulled away and went on to the checkered flag.

As the sun was casting long shadows across the pond, the 4 cylinder
division prepared for their feature event. Justin Eldridge (75) lead
early, but was no match for the bright yellow “Batmobiles” of the
Chase family. Tim Chase, driving last year’s championship winning
number 40 MR2, took the checkers.

The Club’s Latchkey Cup to benefit the Norris Cotton Cancer Center is
scheduled for next Saturday. Area drivers will gather Saturday
morning at 10:00 to race in the 29th annual cup. Check the club’s
